Are you Serious?

I found this picture on Perez Hilton's blog. It is a picture of some twihard (aka Twilight fanatic) who got a part of the novel tattooed on her back. I understand the devotion that these fans have for the novel. And I will be honest, I really enjoyed the first novel. However, as the series progressed, I felt my love dimming. Then as the Twilight mania has taken over, I find myself disliking the whole series more and more. Why might you ask.

Simple. The novel (and its franchise) has become way to overexposed, and taken out of content. Yes, the novel is a love story. However, there is much more to that. Edward and Bella have the most unhealthy relationship that I have ever read about. He is a border-line stalker, and she is obsessed to the point that she would cause harm to herself. Do not believe me, or think that I am being too critical. Read the novel closely, especially New Moon. It is all there, and even this quote on this fan's back alludes to the unhealthiness of this couple: With Edward gone, there is no reason for anything. I do not know about you, but I am ready for the Twilight obsession to be over. It is a decent series, but does not send the greatest of messages to teens.

I'm so ready for the whole craziness to be over too! It's everwhere and I just want it to go away.

That is crazy. I like the books, even with their faults, but some of the stuff around is over the top.

I share your sentiments EXACTLY. As soon as Twilight became a craze (bringing the crazy with it), my love for the series quickly declined.

It is quite ridiculous. Not to mention how the book has totally destroyed vampirism. Once twilight came out, everyone who could pick up and pen came out with a vampire book, making it an almost necessity to need to love them.

I agree with your assessment completely!

While I thouroughly ejoyed the series I agree 100% with your statement "The novel (and its franchise) has become way to overexposed"

Agreed!

You go girl!! I agree with you 100% Actually, I was just talking to my mom about this last week. How all this overexposure is making me dislike the book and I'm almost to the point of getting rid of my series. I thought the novels were okay (definitely have read better) and with each book, well like I said I agree with you.

That's all I'm going to say because I don't want to write an essay about Twilight in your comments - which I totally could.

And I think that tattoo is DUMB! Why would someone put that on themselves. Not that I have anything against tattoos (I have 2 of them) but you have to live with them, so why put something dumb on your body. Why not just carry the book around instead. It's not like she/he can read what's on their back anyways.

I agree and want the crazyness to end too and the fact Twilight has become over expossed..I don't want it to happen to Hunger Games. I was totally into the series 2 years ago...and Because I can watch the movie when ever...I'm having a date night.

I completely agree with you. Although my love for this series waned with Breaking Dawn, I'm so tired of the Twihards thinking that Bella and Edward have a decent relationship.

I might have liked the first book when I read it, but I didn't like books 2 & 3 and I never even gave book 4 a glance. They are poorly written and the obsession over the books and now the actors (who all look like someone needs to introduce them to the concept of SOAP) is just sickening.

That tattoo is stupid.

I was fine with Harry Potter mania, it wasn't anything like this. It was excited kid fun, this is just obsessive and stalkerish over something that isn't even close to being as well written.

For the love of pete - he dictates to her the way she should live and breaks into her room and WATCHES HER WHILE SHE SLEEPS!! Gah!! Restraining order!! STAT!

I so so SO SO SO agree!!!

Why would you want to brand yourself with something so uninspiring?! But if she's happy... :/

the hysteria that twilight's created grated my nerves since day one. I just hate how it's been commercialized! Edward and Bella started out having a lovely romance but then it just got twisted and weird as it went on. (he is quite stalkerish...) I can only hope that once The Host movie comes out, the fans won't be too psychotic @___@;

I never liked the Twilight series on it's own, but there have been worse books written so I never paid it much attention. What makes me HATE the series are the fans, their response to the books, and their reaction to ANY form of criticism, no matter how complimentary. Stephenie Meyer is God, and you're going to Hell if you don't agree.

That tattoo...um. Wow. That's dedication. I wouldn't do that. But to each their own, I guess :)

Wow! I really enjoyed the Twilight books for what they are; quick reads. They should be a quick read for most since they are written at a fourth grade level! Anyways, no not entirely well written, way overexposed, and if I see one more new vampire series on the shelves trying to ride on the coattails of this series I might scream! I did write a decent review on these books on my site, just because I enjoyed them, but this obsession is getting annoying.

I absolutely loved the Twilight series...3 years ago before the movie and before it became overexposed like you said. I still love it but not like the Twihards out there, and I know that there are many, many books out there that are way better. And even though I agree that Edward and Bella had an unhealthy relationship, I think the series became so popular because many teens thought they could relate to the story.

Although I think this specific tattoo is a little over the top, I believe to each their own. I personally wouldn't get a tattoo of the Twilight series or any other book that I can think of, but I have considered getting a tattoo representing a TV show I loved. So I can't criticize anyone for their choices.

I wish this fad would die.
So much.
I'm sort of hoping that all of the Twihards will migrate to the 'Hush,Hush' fandom & believer me - a ton are jumping ship for it. Which is both a curse & a blessing in disguise.

Uh, well. That tattoo is just simply overboard.
I used to really love Twilight, back when I was reading just the first book, but all this insane obsession and fandom over it has sort of made it lose its appeal. Don't get me wrong, I still like Twilight, but it just isn't the same as it once was... And the stalker bit hasn't helped much either, lol.

It's so refreshing to know some people have the same opinion. I try to tell people they have a textbook abusive relationship and yet everyone thinks I'm insane for saying so. Jacob is the only semi rational character in the series (and lord is he fit in the movie lol) but I won't bother seeing it in theatres.

They are trying to compare her writing skill to JK Rowling and say Twilight is bigger than Harry Potter. When I first read Twilight, I had never seen Stephanie Laurens and seriously thought it was written by a 14 year old girl (not a stretch, since Paolini wrote Eragon when he was 15) but then I saw her picture. I was shocked! There's no way she writes like JK! Her writing skills are rudimentary and repetitive, and her characters are all mental!

I agree! Initially I loved Twilight but once it got all BIG and over-the-top, I am so over it now. I am not even that excited for New Moon and New Moon is ... or maybe was my fave book in the series.

I have no problems with SM's writing, excited at first I hated Edward's behaviour. Just have a problem with the whole Twilight saga becoming overrated. There's ever Edward Cullen underwear now. WTF seriously.

Great post!

If anyone ever gets a chance, go to rifftrax.com and spend the couple of bucks on the riff of Twilight. I will never, ever be able to watch any of the other movies after seing this. The riff was way more enjoyable for me than the movies ever were.

i agree. granted i have read the books, enjoyed them (new moon was even my favorite) and gone to see both movies on opening night. but i do realize the unhealthy relationship between the two, and even while watching new moon last night i found myself thinking "obession" in a few scenes.

torn between the bad message of the series and all of the teen readers it has given a newfound love of reading.

LOL, I like it. I want a Twilight related tattoo and a MI one,too - but nothing that big. I've seen a back tattoo of the cover of New Moon, that one was pretty.

I cant explain it, everything you said is true. But....The books have had a positive impact on my life the last 3 years. My love for reading was renewed, my daughter who, I had to force to read(she has dyslexia)LOVES reading now.

Gricel said...

I totally agree! I was trying to explain the destructive relationship between Bella and Edward to my boyfriend this weekend - he wanted to know why girls think it's such a "perfect" romance and could not wrap his head around the weirdness.

nicoliolipoli said...

i hate the fans, too. but i adored the books completely before the movie came out and everything. though, i have to admit, what's more annoying than the fans are the people who say 'twilight sucks!' when they have not even read a sentence of the book. that really makes me mad.
