In My Mailbox (27)

In My Mailbox explores the really cool stuff that comes weekly in my mailbox. Items mentioned have been received from various sources, such as the library, the publisher/author, or bought by me. This event is hosted by Kristi of The Story Siren.

Review:

The Sapphire Flute by Karen Hoover

It has been 3,000 years since a white mage has been seen upon Rasann.

In the midst of a volcanic eruption miles outside of her village, Ember discovers she can see magic and change the appearance of things at will. Against her mother's wishes, she leaves for the mage trials only to be kidnapped before arriving. In trying to escape,she discovers she has inherited her father's secret--a secret that places her in direct conflict with her father's greatest enemy.

At the same time, Kayla is given guardianship of the sapphire flute and told not to play it. The evil mage C'Tan has been searching for it for decades and the sound alone is enough to call her. For the flute to be truly safe, Kayla must find its birthplace in the mountains high above Javak. The girls' paths are set on a collision course ... a course that C'Tan is determined to prevent at all costs.

Design It Up! (11)

Design It Up! is a feature which helps you learn handy little tricks to tweak up your blog. This week we are going to tackle drop down menus. In this instance, I am speaking of a drop down menu for your labels. This can be a really nice tweak due to the amount of space you can save on your sidebar, if you are like most and have more than 5 or so labels.

Let's get started:

1) First, you must have the "Labels" widget present in your Blogger template. If you do not, simply go to "Layout" - "Page Element" - "Add a Gadget" - "Labels".

2) Once this has been set up, go to "Layout" - "Edit HTML"

3) Look for or use CTRL + F to locate:

<b:widget id='Label1' locked='false' title='Labels' type='Label'/>

4) Next delete this entire line of code and replace it with the following:

<b:widget id='Label1' locked='false' title='Labels' type='Label'>
<b:includable id='main'>
<b:if cond='data:title'>
<h2><data:title/></h2>
</b:if>
<div class='widget-content'>

<br />
<select onchange='location=this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;'>
<option>Select a label</option>
<b:loop values='data:labels' var='label'>
<option expr:value='data:label.url'><data:label.name/>
undefined<data:label.count/>)
</option>
</b:loop>
</select>

<b:include name='quickedit'/>
</div>
</b:includable>
</b:widget>

5) "Preview" to make sure it looks how you want it, then "Save". Please note that when previewing, you will not be able to make sure the drop down box works. Also note, that you may have to adjust your sidebar width to accommodate your labels. One way to fix this is not use long label titles.

If you are encountering an error:

Please make sure that when you go into "Edit HTML" to change the code, that you DO NOT check the box to "Expand Widget Templates." This box should be left unexpanded.

A few others are reporting other issues. I am trying to work what problems you may be encountering and will have more information as soon as possible.

Easy Peasy!

Recommend Me (2)

Recommend Me is a weekly event in which participants will pick one of their all time favorite reads to share. This could be a book that your read yesterday or years ago.

To play along, grab a favorite read and tell us about it. You can include your thoughts about the novel, its summary, your favorite memory related to the novel... the possibilities are limitless. If you are up for a challenge, you can also include:
  • Your review of the novel
  • Links to others' reviews of the novel
  • Recommending to a general group of readers or if you want to be extra daring, to specific reader friends
_____________________________________

This week, I recommend:

Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld
Summary from Goodreads:

Just before their sixteenth birthdays, when they will will be transformed into beauties whose only job is to have a great time, Tally's best friend runs away and Tally must find her and turn her in, or never become pretty at all.

I first discovered this novel by chance a few years ago. At the time, I was just getting into the dystopian genre so the ideas that Westerfeld presented were very foreign to me. I remember being astounded by the level of creativity that Westerfeld presents to his readers, and the number of times he used the word 'purchase'. To this day, this novel remains one of my all time favorites due the the novel's originality, characters, and premise. If you have not read this novel yet, you need to. Fans of science fiction and dystopian novels will fall in love with this novel and others in the series.

Other books in the series that I recommend as well:

Pretties Pretties (Uglies, #2) by Scott Westerfeld

Specials Specials (Uglies, #3) by Scott Westerfeld

Extras Extras (Uglies, #4) by Scott Westerfeld

If you enjoyed any of the following novels, then you will want to give Uglies a try:

Skinned Skinned (Skinned, #1) by Robin Wasserman

The Adoration of Jenna Fox The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson

The Giver The Giver (The Giver, #1) by Lois Lowry

Clear the Clutter Mini Challenge

As you may be aware, there are a plethora of challenges being hosted this year. While I am participating in a few, there was still one type of challenge that I have yet to find, so I decided to take the plunge and create it.

Clear Away the Clutter's purpose:

If you are like me, you have an abundant amount of review and TBR books that need desperately your attention. This mini challenge will challenge you to read and do something with those titles once they have been completed.

Your goal is read as many titles as you can and pass along those that you do not absolutely want to keep. This means that if you do not plan to reread a certain book at least once or twice... get rid of it, it is just clutter.

Guidelines:

  • The mini challenge begins March 1st and ends May 31st. You can join at anytime once the challenge as begun.
  • Anyone is welcome to participate in the mini challenge.
  • By the end of the challenge, you MUST get rid of all the titles that you do not absolutely love. You can hold a contest, donate, give to a friend, etc. Your ultimate goal here is to clean off your shelves.
  • You do not have to have a blog to participate. If you are interested, please email me at neverendingshelf@gmail.com for more information.
  • Please create a post for titles you plan to read. You can of course update and modify this list at any time.
  • Once a novel is completed, let us know what you plan to do with it. You can put this information beside the title in your challenge list post. Right now, I am planning to host a large contest for all the novels that I read and do not absolutely love at the end of the challenge.
  • Crossover with other Challenges is welcome.

Levels:
  • Packrat: Read and clean out 5 titles
  • Mini-packrat: Read and clean out 10 titles
  • Organizer: Read and clean out 15 titles
  • Cleaner: Read and clean out 20 titles

If you plan to participate, please link your Clear Away the Clutter Mini Challenge post here. Please link to the actual Mini Challenge post.

Contest Survey Results

Yesterday, I asked readers to share their feelings about contests: what they like, dislike, and any kind of comments they wish to share. From the feedback, it seems apparent that most readers are unhappy with how many hoops they have to jump through in order to even think they have a shot at winning a contest. And although many stated that they will do extra entries, many claim that the amount of those entries is based solely on the prize given away.

Here is the Breakdown:

These finding are based on a total of 151 individual received responses.

My Thoughts:

Going into this survey, I was not 100% sure the responses that I would get. However, I believed that I had a good idea as to how readers would respond. While in some cases I was correct (contest participants generally avoid blog posts), I was surprised to find that participants overall do not mind becoming a blog's follower. But it is important to note that more than one person commented that just because they become a follower, does not make them a loyal reader.

In my case, I plan on shifting more toward simply entries. This is due to the time consuming process of calculating all the extra entries. And I believe that it is hypocritical of me to ask others to complete tasks that I personally would not complete in another's contest. In addition, I must take all of my readers into consideration. Many stated that they dislike the extra entries simply because they do not have a blog or a way to complete these entries.

At this point, my contest participants will continue to be entered via Google Documents Form due to its privacy and ease of organizing everything for me. I will continue to simply ask for: Name, Email Address, and Age. However, I am on the fence about asking for links. Personally, I love using links for extra entries due to it spreading the word about my contests. However, this is a topic that will require more thought on my part since the responses on this was torn: some disliked it and some understood its purpose.

Now to the fun stuff...

Your Thoughts:

An overwhelming number of responses said that they do not enjoy the hoops that many contests ask them to go through. While many said that they understand why certain extra entries are included, a vast majority explained that less is more. And a few even explained that they will participate in some of the extra entries provided, but it is too much, they may skip the contest all together.

There were more responses than I anticipated in regards to those who do not have Facebook, Twitter, or even blogs who find it frustrating when hosts ask for these type of entries. Some explain that they do not have these things for a reason, and will not even bother with a contest if this is part of the extra entries.

An interesting comment that I kept seeing was that some contest hosts are over complicating things. For example, one comment pointed out +10 or even +20 for an extra entry item and questioned it overall purpose. They explained that they believed that the host was, in the end, just making things more difficult for themselves.

In regard to how they like to fill out contests, many commented (without me even asking) that they enjoy Google Document forms due to its easy of completion as well as privacy. For those contests which are entered through the host's comment form, few said they disliked having to put each entry into a new comment especially when word verification is present.

Bottomline: Contest entrants want contests to be simple. They want to be able to enter a contest probably in less than 2-3 minutes without having to spend eternity doing this or that task in order to be entered. And while some enjoy extra entries, they too would like some of the extras to be toned down a bit.

Final Thoughts:

While it is obivous that for the most part that readers do not enjoy over the top extra entries, some do enjoy the advantages that they can bring. Sadly, I know that we cannot please everyone. But I believe that contest hosts have a duty to remember their audience, and try to find as happy a middle as possible.

Most bloggers want their readers to enter the contests as well as add to their readership. Yet as many pointed out, contests to do not always equal loyal followers or readers. In addition, hosts must also consider that all entrants do not always have equal footing in what they can do. And while I understand the purpose of using links, followers, blog posts, etc. I realize that it can often times turn off readers due to them believing that others have an unfair advantage just because they do not have a blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Through this survey, I have realized that this is their choice and who am I to penalize them for something they do not want to participate in.

I realize that contests are meant to be fun for my readers and sometimes even a reward.. a thank you for being loyal to me or for enjoying what I do. I am in no way telling other bloggers that you need to change the way that you run your contests. At the end of the day, it is up to each host to realize what works best for them and their readers. I am merely providing some thoughts to think on.

Thank you to everyone who participated in my survey. This was an eye opening experience to say the least.

    Thoughts on Contests

    As a regular contest participant, I have begun to question the necessity of extra entries. Many contests require entrants to jump through numerous hoops in the hopes of having a shot at winning the book, prize pack, etc.

    I have come to the realization that if it annoys me to go through these hoops, then others must be annoyed as well. Therefore, if you have a moment, please complete the following survey, so that I can improve my Contests. I have a few planned for the upcoming weeks and I would like as many as possible to enjoy them.

    Book Review: Magic Under Glass

    Author: Jaclyn Dolamore
    Released: December 22nd 2009 by Bloomsbury USA Children's Books
    Edited Summary from Book's Dustjacket:

    Nimira is a music-hall girl used to singing for pennies. So when wealthy young sorcerer Hollin Parry hires her to perform with a piano-playing automaton, Nimira believes it will be the start of a better life. But when she arrives at the Parry's estate, it is not the glittering world she expected. Instead, unsettling rumors begin to swirl about a madwoman roaming the halls at night, and Nimira suspects that Parry is keeping secrets, even while he proclaims to be falling in love with her.

    And then there is the automaton itself, a mechanical man so realistically crafted it hardly seems possible that he isn't alive... or is he? As Nimira begins to rehearse with him, she senses something stirring beneath his handsome features. Is he haunted, as the servants claim, or is there something more to it?

    Faeries, magic, romance... oh my! These amazing elements and much more blend together perfectly in this magical debut novel. The plot is engaging, unique, and I had the hardest time putting this book down. Dolamore has created an instant classic in her debut novel. It is simply that amazing.

    The world depicted is full of beautiful colors and depth, which can be a rare feat in a debut novel. To be honest, if I had not known Dolamore was a debut author, I would have sworn that she had been writing for numerous years. There is so much promise and complexity to her writing, to her characters, to her premise... to everything in her novel. In addition, I throughly enjoyed the emotions that were in this novel. Dolamore made me care about these characters. I wanted only good to come for Nim and her relationships. She is a phenomenal character, the best that I have had the pleasure to get to know in a long time. And her relationship with both Hollin and Erris was fascinating. I was on the edge of my seat to discover what little twists Dolamore would throw my way next.

    This debut novel has earned a special place in my heart as well as on my bookshelf. It has instantly become one of my favorites of all time. And I would whole heartily recommend this novel to anyone who believes in magic.. in love.. in faeries. It is amazing novel by an amazing author. I recommend that you remember the name Jaclyn Dolamore because we readers have not seen the last of her and her outstanding literary contributions. I await with bated breath to see what is next for her because whatever it is, I am sure it will be amazing.

    Book Review: Captivate

    Author: Carrie Jones
    Released: January 5th 2010 by Bloomsbury USA
    Copy Provided by: Around the World Tours
    Summary from GoodReads:

    Contains spoilers/information from the previous novel. Read at your own risk.
    Zara and her friends knew they hadn't solved the pixie problem for good. Far from it. The king's needs grow deeper every day he's stuck in captivity, while his control over his people gets weaker. It's made him vulnerable. And now there's a new king in town.

    A turf war is imminent, since the new pixie king, Astley, is moving in quickly. Nick nearly killed him in the woods on day one, but Zara came to his rescue. Astley swears that he and Zara are destined to be together, that he's one of the good guys. Nick isn't buying it, though Zara isn't as sure -- despite herself, she wants to trust the new king. But it's a lot more than her relationship with Nick that is at stake. It's her life -- and his.

    May contain spoilers from Need, please read at your own risk.

    Captivate was an amazingly entertaining read. Like its predecessor, Need, the novel is full of creative elements. The words fly off the pages, sucking readers into this unique world that Jones has created. The plot picks up right where Need left off: Zara is beginning to settle into her new life with her grandmother, her relationship with Nick is going strong, everything seems to be a positive... except Zara's father. He and the other pixies are a sore spot that Zara just cannot ignore. And to top everything off, a new pixie king emerges causing Zara to question everything.

    While this novel is missing a few elements that made Need so special for me (Zara's continuous listing of phobias and the creepiness factor), Jones more than makes up for it through her usage of powerful emotions. This novel will make you laugh, make you sigh, and more than likely, make you cry.

    In regards to the characters, I am happy to report that for the most part, they remained true to their personalities: Zara is still her phobia-loving self, Nick is still a little over possessive, etc. However, it is the newer characters made me scratch my head a few times while trying to understand their purpose. Astley is a prime example of this. While he has the possibility to be a wonderful, sexy character, he can sometimes come off a little boring. Yes, this is his introduction novel, but I wanted to get to know him better... I wanted to see if you can trust a pixie. Unfortunately, with this novel, readers are only able to put out their feelers for him, and the truth behind his character and motivation will not be revealed at least until the next novel. Having enjoyed novels similar to these, I am very curious to see what path Jones will take with Astley. I have a few hunches, but I will have to wait and see if I am right.

    While I did not overall love Captivate as much as Need, Captivate still has a lot going for it. There is plenty of romance, sadness, changes in character development, etc. For those of you who enjoyed Need, Captivate is a must read. For those who have been a little hesitant about reading this series, I say, give it a try. It is a truly amazing series.

    Book Review: The Dark Divine

    Author: Bree Despain
    Released: December 22nd 2009 by EgmontUSA
    Copy Provided by: Publisher
    Summary from GoodReads:

    Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared--the night she found her brother Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in his own blood--but she has no idea what a truly monstrous secret that night held.

    The memories her family has tried to bury resurface when Daniel returns, three years later, and enrolls in Grace and Jude's high school. Despite promising Jude she'll stay away, Grace cannot deny her attraction to Daniel's shocking artistic abilities, his way of getting her to look at the world from new angles, and the strange, hungry glint in his eyes.

    The closer Grace gets to Daniel, the more she jeopardizes her life, as her actions stir resentment in Jude and drive him to embrace the ancient evil Daniel unleashed that horrific night. Grace must discover the truth behind the boy's dark secret...and the cure that can save the ones she loves. But she may have to lay down the ultimate sacrifice to do it--her soul.

    The Dark Divine is an interesting mix of Christian ideals and mythological lore. The premise centers around the Divine family. A family who the community looks to for their Christian example. On the surface, this appears to be the perfect family: father is a respected pastor, both older children are good students and help out in the community... but appearances can be deceiving. And in this family, there is a dark secret that is not discussed under any circumstance... the dark Divine.

    Did I love this book... no. Did I really enjoy it... yes, for the most part. The premise was really interesting, but I think at this point I am really burned out on certain paranormal creatures. And unfortunately, Despain's usage of a certain paranormal creature brings very little new details to an already highly discussed topic. However, I highly enjoyed Despain's usage of the historical fiction elements. It gave a nice depth to her novel, and made the whole paranormal premise more believable.

    As a whole, I loved the characters that Despain created. Grace was an interesting mix of Christian ideology and doubt. Throughout the novel, I found it interesting how Grace chose to deal with certain situations. There are numerous times when it seems as if her brain was on auto pilot as she acted in certain "Christian" ways. Thankfully, Despain counters this with moments where Grace acts out of this comfort zone. It is in those rare moments that I really grew to like her character. As for Daniel, I am still on the fence with his character. On one hand, I loved the interactions between him and Grace. He is the cause of her acting out of her comfort zone, so that gives him points. On the other hand, I found it hard to believe that Grace could easily accept the things that he has done and continues to do throughout the novel. My only explanation for this is her using her Christian side to find forgiveness and acceptance. In addition, love can blind so it is possible that she just chooses to overlook these discretions in favor of the love she holds for him.

    Despite my overload with a certain paranormal creature, this novel holds a lot of promise for readers. There is romance, intrigue, a little bit of suspense, and diverse family interactions. And while I am not the largest fan of novels with overt Christian themes, I found this novel easy to stomach. Despain skillfully blends the ideology with the paranormal to give a little something for each type of reader.

    Design It Up! (10)

    Design It Up! is a feature which helps you learn handy little tricks to tweak up your blog. Today's question comes from Molly:

    I noticed in the bottom of your postings is your name... how is this done?

    The signature at the bottom of a post is a relatively easy tweak to add. Honestly, I think it will take you longer to decide which font, size, and color you want than it will to install. Here is how it is done:

    1.) First, you need to make your signature. You can do this in a few ways. If you want to take the easy route, I recommend using My Live Signature. All you need to do is visit their site, and follow the on screen directions. It is free to use, and you do not have to register for account unless you want one. Other signature creating options include: Photoshop and GIMP.

    2.) After you have created the signature, you are going to want to save it. If you are using My Live Signature, you are going to need to select to download it, so that it may be saved.

    3.) Now, you are going to want to upload your signature. I recommend using Photobucket for its ease of use. However, there are plenty of other file uploading sites that you can use.

    4.) Once the signature has been uploaded, you are going to want to get the direct link to it. You will want to keep this link handy, as we will be using it shortly.

    5.) Next, log into your Blogger account. Go to "Layout" - "Edit HTML"

    6.) On the "Edit HTML" page. look for (or use Ctrl +F to locate) the following line of code under your "Posts" section: .post-footer-line-1{

    7.) Directly underneath this line, insert the following if it is not already there: background:url('');

    In the '' area, you will insert the direct link which you created earlier. Your finished code should look like this:

    .post-footer-line-1{
    background:url('http://i914.photobucket.com/albums/ac342/neverendingshelf/kate.png');

    8) Now you can "Preview" your blog to make sure everything looks how you want it. Then "Save" and you are done.

    Easy Peasy!

    This week, I recommend:

    Skin Hunger by Kathleen Duey
    Summary from GoodReads:

    Sadima lives in a world where magic has been banned, leaving poor villagers prey to fakes and charlatans. A "magician" stole her family's few valuables and left Sadima's mother to die on the day Sadima was born. But vestiges of magic are hidden in old rhymes and hearth tales and in people like Sadima, who conceals her silent communication with animals for fear of rejection and ridicule. When rumors of her gift reach Somiss, a young nobleman obsessed with restoring magic, he sends Franklin, his lifelong servant, to find her. Sadima's joy at sharing her secret becomes love for the man she shares it with. But Franklin's irrevocable bond to the brilliant and dangerous Somiss traps her, too, and she faces a heartbreaking decision.

    Centuries later magic has been restored, but it is available only to the wealthy and is strictly controlled by wizards within a sequestered academy of magic. Hahp, the expendable second son of a rich merchant, is forced into the academy and finds himself paired with Gerrard, a peasant boy inexplicably admitted with nine sons of privilege and wealth. Only one of the ten students will graduate -- and the first academic requirement is survival.

    Sadima's and Hahp's worlds are separated by generations, but their lives are connected in surprising and powerful ways in this brilliant first book of Kathleen Duey's dark, complex, and completely compelling trilogy.

    This is What Pressure Looks Like

    First of all, I want to thank all of the supporters out there who stood up against the waste that Borders was producing. I still have yet to receive a response to any of my emails; however, I discovered this interesting press release today. It goes as follows:

    Thousands of books, CDs, DVDs and gift items will be donated—rather than being disposed of—to organizations within the Gifts In Kind national network of charities

    January 21, 2010, Washington, D.C.— Gifts In Kind International (www.giftsinkind.org), a leading charitable organization in the product giving field, is pleased to announce a new agreement with Borders Group, Inc. and its subsidiaries (NYSE: BGP). Borders selected Gifts In Kind to help the company donate—rather than dispose of—items that have not sold in its Borders and Waldenbooks stores nationwide and cannot be returned by the retailer to its suppliers.

    The relationship between the two organizations kicks off later this month with a major product donation—including more than 50,000 individual items that Borders and Waldenbooks stores have amassed—to jump-start the alliance with Gifts In Kind. These items will be donated to hundreds of local organizations within the Gifts In Kind national network of charities, which now numbers more than 2,000 organizations. Beyond the kick-off donation, Borders and Waldenbooks stores throughout the country intend to soon begin a long-term alliance with Gifts In Kind, directly donating items from their individual stores on an ongoing basis to local charities that are part of Gifts In Kind’s national network. Charities wishing to be involved in this effort should contact Gifts In Kind’s Melissa Trumpower (mltrumpower@giftsinkind.org).

    “Borders is taking an industry leading position by working with us to get products that cannot be returned or sold to people in need,” said Gifts In Kind International President and CEO Cindy Hallberlin “We applaud their community commitment and are thrilled to have Borders join our other retail partners in giving back to the communities where their employees live and work. These are challenging times and people need retailers like Borders to step up and get involved in supporting their communities.”

    “Our stores across the country are regarded as community centers where people come to meet, explore and share their passion for books. It is a natural extension of our strong community focus to give our stores a way to help their local neighbors at a time when so many need help,” said Mike Edwards, Executive Vice President and Chief Merchandising Officer. “This new alliance with Gifts In Kind supplements what we are already doing through existing book drives, which have resulted in thousands of new books going to local charities across the U.S. Now, we have a way to donate non-returnable and unsold items as well, rounding out our giving efforts to the fullest.”

    About Gifts In Kind International:

    Ranked by Forbes Magazine as one of the nation’s best-managed charities in America, Gifts In Kind International

    (www.giftsinkind.org) is dedicated to helping people and communities by distributing new corporate product donations— including books, toys, personal care products and clothing, building supplies, computers and other technology products, and much more—to qualified nonprofit organizations. The charitable organization works with more than half of the Fortune 100 consumer, retail and technology companies. Last year, Gifts In Kind distributed product donations valued at more than $400 million.

    About Borders Group:

    While it is too late for some of the poor books, I am happy that the company is finally taking the correct steps forward. Hopefully, other wasteful companies will see this as awake up call and follow in Borders' footsteps.

    Book Review: Restoring Harmony

    Author: Joëlle Anthony
    Releases: May 13th 2010 by Putnam Juvenile
    Copy Provided by: Around the World Tours
    Summary from GoodReads:

    The year is 2041, and Molly McClure was only six when the Collapse of ’31 happened, ending life as the world’s population knew it. When she is forced to leave the comfort of her small B.C. island to travel down to Oregon, Molly discovers how hard the Collapse has been on the rest of the world. What starts out as a quick trip to the U.S. to convince her grandfather to return to Canada and be the island’s doctor, becomes a rescue mission. How much will she have to compromise to succeed in getting back home?

    Restoring Harmony was a very enjoyable read. It was not the best dystopian I have ever read, but it was not the worst... it ranks in about the middle. I thought the premise had much promise; however, there seems to be a spark missing... that special element that would have transformed this novel from okay to wow! One aspect that bothered me as a reader was that Anthony describes this world as a very dangerous place for Molly, but all things considered, she gets from Canada to her grandparents surprisingly easy. Yes, there are a few bumps in the road, but everything continuously works out for the best. This continuous good luck made me question the believability of the novel. I wanted to submerse myself in the world that Anthony had created, but little things like this throughout held me back.

    In regards to the characters, I typically enjoyed them. Molly was a unique character, and I loved reading about her fiddle playing. The characters of Spill and Grandpa added in made this novel more fun and adventurous. As for the plot, it was generally a slower paced novel. Anthony takes her time bringing the characters and plot to certain points. She then lets readers fully understand what is taking place at a specific moment before moving them on to the next. This was something I really appreciated as a reader. I did not feel as if Anthony was rushing the novel along, or skipping out on details that may have been important.

    All in all, this was an enjoyable novel. The characters were fun and interesting. The plot was paced nicely for this premise. This is a lovely read for any dystopian fans, or readers wanting to ease into the dystopian genre.

    A Letter to Borders

    As part of my outcry against this horrible act of waste, I emailed Borders Group Inc. the following to explain my displeasure. Any response that I receive will be discussed at a later date.

    _____________________________

    Dear Employee sitting behind a desk that will probably just send me a form response,

    My name is Kate. I am a book reviewer, a book lover, and even a former employee of your company. Today, I became aware of an horrendous issue that I believe effects all book lovers: the throwing away of perfectly good novels by the hundreds, by the thousands, and by some accounts even the tens of thousands. Today, I hang my head in shame for admitting that I ever proudly worked for a company such as yours. Today, is a sad day for book lovers across the nation as one of the largest booksellers would rather tear off book covers and trash the remains, than donate these items to needy schools and libraries. These are the same institutions which educate your own children. The places that are helping to instill positive views on learning, imagination, and discovery of fictional as well as realistic worlds.

    While I understand any point that you would make about trying to recover as much monetary funds as possible to maintain the company, I must still voice my displeasure at the means in which you are attempting to do so. You see I worked for your company, in the customer service department I might add, and have undergone numerous staff meetings in regards to the status of the company. I understand that the company is in dire straits both from a PR and financial stand point. I was there in those meetings when we were told that the company had laid off hundreds of loyal employees in the home office. I was there later when my own Customer Service Center began to lay off employees, and was told that I would now have to either deal with upcoming work related fluctuations due to the lay offs or I could “abandon ship” and quit. To be honest, at that time, I saw a company that looked like it wanted to be better for its employees as well as its customers, so I remained loyal. However, at this moment, I am no longer loyal to your company. I cannot with a clear conscience say that I will shop at a company that continues to believe in these practices. Yes, I understand that there are companies out there who participate in these same practices. And it is possible that over time, the amount of waste all becomes equal. However, when I see a library reach out to your company to ask for a donation, and all they receive in response is a form letter, it pisses me off.

    I understand that the company cannot help every library... every school, but to say that there are no items to donate when clearly there are, makes your company look like bold faced liars. By using this practice, you are not only hurting your company, its employees, and your investors, but you are also hurting our children and others that could positively benefit from these books. Please consider doing some good in this poor economy and help those in need. Even if it is a smaller contribution, you are still helping. A small step forward is greater than the large leap backwards that your company is taking at this point. I look forward to your response, and am curious to see what actions your company makes in response to this outcry of waste.

    Sincerely,

    Kate Bourne

    A Call to Bloggers and Booklovers Alike

    It has come to my attention that Borders is in the process of throwing away TENS of THOUSANDS of unsold books once their over 200 stores close at the end of January. As a former Borders employee, I know that some of their practices are not always in their customers, or even employees, best interest. However, this new practice disgusts me to a new level.

    With the economy the way it is and with the way some libraries suffering, you might think that one of the largest bookstores in the country would take the high road and do something better with a large amount of books besides this:

    The picture shows possibly hundreds of discarded books in a Waldenbooks dumpster. It is being said that the company believes that it is cheaper to rip of the covers and trash them instead of donating to local schools, libraries, etc. And instead of being honest with these institutions who have asked for donations, the company lies to them:

    12/11/2009

    Dear Parnell Memorial Library,

    Thank you for your inquiry regarding Waldenbooks store stock. We agree that donating books is a worthy concept. However, we do not expect to have any remaining product to donate once we complete clearance sales at the 200 Waldenbooks stores that we plan to close in January 2010. To explain, we have retained the services of an outside firm that specializes in store closings/clearance sales. This firm has structured a process for these sales that involves discounting, moving product that is not selling to higher volume stores and consolidating inventory. Through this process, we sincerely expect to have virtually no product left our goal is to sell everything. Therefore, we do not expect to have product to donate or to dispose of. I hope this addresses your concerns. Thank you again for writing. I hope this is helpful. If you should have any other questions or comments, please don't hesitate to let us know.

    Sincerely,

    Layla

    No stock... hmm.. well, a picture is worth a thousand words, and the pictures that are going around the interwebs tell a totally different story than what this form email says. As readers and booklovers, I think it is important to tell companies that this is not an okay practice. There are hundreds, possibly even thousands of different alternatives to just throwing these books away.

    Want to help get these books donated instead of trashed? Let's show Borders that we are not pleased by helping to spread the word, join the Facebook group, contact Borders... anything you think would help let them know how we feel on this matter.

    Author Safari

    Come take a journey into the undiscovered territory of the Author. Authors are an interesting species... they provide readers with hours of entertainment... yet they remain mainly aloof from the public eye. Based on years of research, Kristen and I discovered that the secret to learning more about these aloof creatures is to observe them in their natural environment. Therefore, dear readers, we will be hosting an Author Safari twice a month to lead readers into this unexplored territory. So grab your equipment and let's head off for an adventure.

    Rules of the Safari:
    • Adventurers must leave all hands and feet inside the vehicle, and may only travel on the below mentioned paths.
    • 2 clues will be given regarding the item that we are searching for: one on The Neverending Shelf and one on Bookworming in the 21st Century. Items will be in image form unless otherwise noted.
    • In order to be entered for this week's prize, readers must venture out to the hosts' and author's sites listed. Once the adventurer believes that they have found the item in question, they must fill out the included form listed on either host's Safari posting. Please enter only once on either of the forms. Duplicate entries will be deleted.

    Author of the week:

    Jaclyn Dolamore

    Beautiful Dead:

    Book Review: Veracity and Giveaway

    Author: Laura Bynum
    Released: January 5th 2010 by Pocket
    Copy Provided by: Publisher for Blog Tour
    Summary from GoodReads:

    Harper Adams was six years old in 2012 when an act of viral terrorism wiped out one-half of the country's population. Out of the ashes rose a new government, the Confederation of the Willing, dedicated to maintaining order at any cost. The populace is controlled via government-sanctioned sex and drugs, a brutal police force known as the Blue Coats, and a device called the slate, a mandatory implant that monitors every word a person speaks. To utter a Red-Listed, forbidden word is to risk physical punishment or even death.

    But there are those who resist. Guided by the fabled "Book of Noah," they are determined to shake the people from their apathy and ignorance, and are prepared to start a war in the name of freedom. The newest member of this resistance is Harper -- a woman driven by memories of a daughter lost, a daughter whose very name was erased by the Red List. And she possesses a power that could make her the underground warriors' ultimate weapon -- or the instrument of their destruction.

    Laura Bynum has written an astonishing debut novel about a chilling, all-too-plausible future in which speech is a weapon and security comes at the highest price of all.

    Veracity takes place in the near future, in a world that has been overtaken by fear... fear of censorship.. fear of tyranny.. fear of just about everything. The novel centers around Harper who has the interesting ability to sense people's thoughts and feelings through color auras. While it is easy to suspend belief in regards to Harper, sadly I had a harder time doing this for much of the rest of the novel.

    The world that Bynum has created has the potential to be amazing, but there are elements that just did not click or fell flat. Personally, I believe that if the author had taken about 10 more pages to add in little details here and there, then this novel would have been amazing. I feel that the novel's main issues seem to stem more from the details that were left out rather than what was included. If those additional pages had been included, then I believe that it would be easier on readers to fully immersed themselves in the world that Bynum created. In addition, these details would have hopefully blended certain aspects together, making the novel more cohesive and believable.

    Despite a few iffy issues, this novel was really decent. I really liked Harper's character and everything that she underwent in the novel to find her place. I do wish that Bynum had included a little bit more character development for her; however, the lack of development does not fully take away from the enjoyment of the novel. For me, in this case, it would have been an added bonus more than anything. Veracity is an excellent novel for readers who enjoyed The Handmaiden's Tale or V for Vendetta.

      In My Mailbox (25)

      In My Mailbox explores the really cool stuff that comes weekly in my mailbox. Items mentioned have been received from various sources, such as the library, the publisher/author, or bought by me. This event is hosted by Kristi of The Story Siren.

      Before I get into showing you what I got this week, I want share with you my Kate Fail. Yesterday, I had the bright idea to get back into the habit of vlogging since I really enjoy doing them. Between yesterday and today, I have done 78 IMM vlog takes... yes, you read that right 78. Some of the issues were me... but most were my cats. They continuously meowed, jumped on things which made me laugh, or just did something that distracted me. So unfortunately, I have just thrown in the proverbial towel this week. However, I was thinking about editing my bloopers together for kicks and giggles. Let me know if that is something you would like to see.
