Decorating With a Football Theme

If your son is an avid football supporter, his dream bedroom will probably have some sort of a football theme. Get your child involved in the process, let them pick the colours and details and you can really enjoy this project together.

There are two ways to approach theming a child’s bedroom, an easily changeable surface makeover or going all out on the theme.  If the subject is something that you suspect your child may grow out of or is a passing phase, it is sensible to paint the walls and choose carpets in a neutral colour. Football themed curtains and duvet cover can be easily changed and removeable wall stickers and posters will complete the look.

The second approach is less easily reversible, but if you aren’t planning on moving house in the near future and your child is passionate about their team, there is no better way to express their support.

Floors

A bright green carpet, or even real Astroturf, will create an ideal base. You could even mark white lines with white spray paint and a stencil. If you don’t want to change your carpet, then a bright green football rug would create a similar effect.

Walls

Depending on how garish the colours of the team strip are you may want to paint all of the walls in the team colours, or keep this just for an accent wall.

Alternatively, why not get a photograph of your child’s favourite player digitally printed onto wallpaper (or a photograph of them playing football). If you are particularly artistic, perhaps your child and you can design a football mural to paint on the walls. First borrow an overhead projector. Then decide what the design is to be, draw it on a sheet of A4 acetate and then project your design full scale onto the wall to trace around.

Curtain and duvet covers

Curtains and duvet covers are easily changed and can be updated as regularly as the team strip.

Furniture

You can purchase lots of specially made football themed furniture, but if your budget is limited you can adapt your existing furniture yourself and achieve a similar effect. Why not cut a piece of mdf or plywood into a semicircle to serve as an outline for a football themed headboard? You can use football stickers to decorate your existing wooden furniture and football themed chairs and beanbags can be purchased cheaply online. Doors of storage units can be updated by painting in colours to match your chosen theme or covering with football posters and stickers.

Accessories

The right accessories will complete the look. Door furniture and light switches can be replaced to coordinate with the theme. Make sure that you provide enough shelving to tidily store all his football trophies and collectables (painted to coordinate with the chosen theme, of course.) Football lights and lampshades will complete the look. A football jersey framed and mounted on the wall signed by your child’s team will provide the perfect finishing touch and give your child a bedroom that will be the envy of all their friends.
